Long time Cienega football coach and assistant principal Nemer Hassey has been named as the new principal for Cienega High School. The Vail Unified School District Governing Board named Hassey at its latest meeting; his appointment will take effect on December 1, 2014.
Hassey stated he would see the Cienega football team through the 2014 season first then he will assume his role as the high school's newest principal. He was hired first as a teacher, while Cienega was in its planning stages then progressed to Athletics Director, Head Football Coach and Math Department Chair. In 2006, Hassey was appointed assistant principal of CHS, and he will receive an award as Arizona's High School Assistant Principal of the Year, in Washington D.C. this spring.
"Most people know of Mr. Hassey due to the successful football program he built at the school", said Superintendent Calvin Baker, in a recent release from the district. "While that success is important, Mr. Hassey's most important contribution to Cienega is the strong academic standard he helped establish at the school as a highly successful math teacher and instructional leader."
Hassey will replace current principal Dr. Tricia Pena, who will be retiring at the end of the school year. According to the release Dr. Pena "leaves behind an example and legacy of persistence, compassion, cooperation, and dedication. The mark she has left on the heart of the Vail community and in the hearts of countless students, families, and staff through her years of service will never be forgotten."
