The Cochise County Sheriff's Office is investigating shooting involving a Border Patrol Agent.

A CCSO news release states they received a call on the evening of January 16, about a shooting had taken place off Highway 80, near Apache.

When CCSO deputies and investigators arrived on scene they were told by Border Patrol agents they had been tracking illegal immigrants on foot and had two suspects in custody, but that a third had fled the scene.

The agents reported finding a Hispanic male, possibly in his late 20's hiding under some brush.  The suspect struggled with a Border Patrol agent, allegedly attempting to get the agent's weapon.  According to reports from the CCSO the agent shot at the suspect, fearing for his personal safety.  The shot hit the suspect in the upper body, reports stated, the suspect died at the scene from his injuries.

According to the CCSO release the body has been transported to the Pima County Medical Examiner's Office for a complete autopsy and possible identification.

CCSO is continuing the investigation into the incident, and has contacted the Mexican Consulate, who will be assisting in the continuing investigation.
