Pastor remembers Meg Menzies

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

The untimely death of avid runner Meg Menzies has touched so many people. We caught up with Meg's pastor. He talks about the message of encouragement he shared at her emotional service that brought out a capacity crowd.

"We weren't surprised," said Pastor Brad Hoffman about the devoted wife and mother. "Meg was loved. Her family was loved."

Pastor Hoffman, of Cool Spring Baptist Church, says Meg died doing what she loved. She was hit and killed while jogging in a DUI accident. Pastor Hoffman released a blog about the tragedy 24 hours after the incident.

"The desire was to somehow share hope in the midst of the tragedy that took place," said Pastor Hoffman.

Meg's church has a recreation ministry. The main worship center features an indoor running track.

"We are dealing with the loss of somebody that we knew and that volunteered and was a big part of our church family," said Hoffman.

1200 people attended this ceremony. 900 people were in the worship center, and another 300 people were sent to a overflow room.

"So many of our church family came together to celebrate a life and to minister to each other," said Hoffman.

That outreach continues over the weekend. 70,000 people from across the world are expected to run in Meg's honor.

"I think it speaks to the spirit of the community," said Hoffman. "I think it speaks to the spirit of people in tragedy wanting to make the best of it."

A run is planned at River's Edge Elementary School Saturday. It starts at 9 AM. You can run, bike, or walk three miles to Deep Run High School.
