One person dead following South Richmond house fire

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond fire officials have identified the man found dead in a house fire as 70-year-old Clifton J. Troutman III.

The fire was called in around 3p.m. for the home in the 4900 block of Riverside Drive.

Crews said they arrived to heavy smoke coming from the first and second floor.

D'Arcy O'Neil lives just a few houses down from Troutman's home.

He came home to see his neighborhood crowded with fire fighters and trucks.

"Its definitely more action than we usually see around here then and to come and find out it had a sad ending, it's a terrible thing to hear," said O'Neil.

O'Neil said Troutman was a dear neighbor to many.

"The man who lived in here, was like a fixture, kind of like the neighborhood watch, always just in the alley, around, an ex-military guy, he's one of the nicest people, so it was really sad to hear that it ended badly for him," said O'Neil, "it was always comforting to know just by his age I just knew he was around keeping an eye on things always made me feel comfortable because he was such a nice man just a really kind person."

Fire officials said there is another person who lives in the home and oddly enough, this is the second time firefighters have responded to his home recently.

"There is word that we responded here the last couple of days for some sort of heating related issue," said Lt. Robbie Hagaman.

The investigation into what started the fire is ongoing but authorities say this does not appear to be suspicious.

We do know the American Red Cross is assisting the other person that lived in that home.
