TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Keeping teachers in Southern Arizona will prove to be a bit of a challenge, according to the results from a new first time study by Tucson Values Teachers.

Tucson Values Teachers surveyed more than 1,600 teachers, of which 27 percent stated they would likely not be teaching in Southern Arizona in the next five years.  This new report provides data that helps the group understand what life is like for a teacher.

The survey reports that 86 percent of all teachers stated they were not likely to recommend their profession to someone else.  Only 31 percent of the teachers interviewed stated they were satisfied with their job.

According to the survey teachers spend about 60 hours a week in the classroom teaching, while they spend an additional 124 hours a year on professional development, summer preparation and other teaching activities.

Another surprise from the survey is that teachers state they spend more than $1,100 of their own money each year to buy classroom supplies, as well as professional development.
