TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A local middle school teacher was recognized with a national certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Shannon Carmichael, a Reading Specialist at Coyote Trail Elementary, was awarded for her work with young children in literacy and language arts. She was recognized during a school governing board meeting on Thursday, Jan. 23.

Carmichael has worked in education for eight years. She joins seven other teachers in the Marana Unified School District who are Nationally Board Certified.

National Board Certification is a process that requires peer-review and approval as well as verification of skills to advance students.
