PHOENIX (Tucson News Now) - The new year is barely a month old for most of us, but it's already the middle of the year for the Arizona Lottery, and it looks to be a strong one.
The lottery says sales are up in the current fiscal year, pacing 7.8 percent over fiscal year 2013 and currently totaling more than $349.5 million.
One thing that helped: December's $636 million Mega Millions jackpot, which amped up sales just before Christmas. The game got a makeover last October to start with larger jackpots and grow them faster, along with a $1 million second prize and better odds.
Since the game's redesign, Arizona has sold two $1 million Mega Millions second prize winning tickets. The redesign of the game and the near-record jackpot has resulted in a 101.9 percent increase in Mega Millions sales over the same period last year.
The lottery also reports a 9.5 percent increase in the sale of scratch-off tickets, which featured several new games.
