AL to examine ways to harvest oil sitting underneath state

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Governor Robert Bentley said there are 750 billion barrels of oil underneath Central and North Alabama. Now he is exploring ways to harvest it.

The oil is in several North Alabama counties; Gov. Bentley said it's in the ground now and in the form of oil sands. He said Alabama is one of only three states in the country to have oil sands.

According to the Geological Survey of Alabama, that oil sand stretches from Colbert County all the way to Birmingham. The governor recently budgeted $1 million to explore how to go after the oil sands. He said the Alabama Oil & Gas Board is going to set up rules and regulations so that everything is done in an environmentally-friendly way.

"The thing we have to consider is these are oil sands, which are really different than pockets of oil, but I can tell you there's a lot of oil in North Alabama," said Bentley.

The governor said there is no timetable on when we could see that 750 billion barrels of Alabama oil harvested.
