Sporting KC looking for trifecta

Posted: Updated:

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — MLS Cup champion Sporting Kansas City signed Chance Myers to a new contract, and the talented defender joined the club in Tucson on Thursday to begin training camp.

Myers will be entering his seventh season with the club, making him the second-longest tenured player on the roster. He's been Sporting KC's starting right back the last three seasons.

Sporting KC is training at the Kino Complex for a fourth straight year. They played a closed friendly with host FC Tucson on Tuesday and will square of in a public Desert Friendly with the Portland Timbers Saturday evening.

Myers teamed with Matt Besler, Aurelien Collin and Seth Sinovic to form a back line that led MLS in fewest goals the past two seasons. Sporting KC is 29-7-8 when those four are in the starting lineup.

Earlier this month, Myers was called up for the U.S. men's national team's training camp for the first time. He and Sinovic are two of five players from the squad who have trained with the USMNT since the end of the MLS season.

Sporting KC opens their season with four matches in 12 days including two in the Champions League Cup. The side is attempting to win the CONCACAF tournament, take the U.S. Open Cup and repeat as champions in Major League Soccer.
