(CNN) - A new study finds that kids' "weight fate" may be determined by the time they are 5-years-old.
Researchers from Emory University looked at more than 7,700 children who were in kindergarten in 1998 in the U.S.
They weighed and measured the children seven times over a nine year period.
Researchers found children who were overweight when they were five were four times more likely to become obese during that time period than kids who were at a normal weight.
The study was published this week in the New England journal of Medicine.
The study was funded by the federal government.
