TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson's homeless downtown were first told not to loiter in the parks and now they are being offered work.

Today at 7 a.m. they can start earning up to $8 an hour by helping out during the Tucson Gem and Mineral Showcase, picking up trash.

The non-profit organization Primavera Works will hire up to 12 workers each day, many from local area shelters.

As for today's schedule, a crew of four will begin trash pickup along the I-10 corridor.

This work program began in 2013 when the City of Tucson reached out to Primavera for extra hands to help keep the gem show vendor areas tidy.

According to Primavera, funding for the project comes both from the City and private donors.
