TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Academic Decathlon team from Canyon del Oro brought home a regional title and the top score in last weekend's Region Three Competition.  The competition was held at Walden Grove High School in Sahuarita, and teams from Pima, Pinal, Cochise, Santa Cruz and Yuma Counties competed.

CDO's AD team had an overall score of 45538.00 to earn top honors in the state and earn its 13th consecutive regional title; in addition its members won a total of 60 individual medals and thousands of dollars in scholarships.

"Everyone is very positive and supportive of each other," stated AD Coach and CDO math teacher Chris Yetman on this year's team.  "We are working very hard to become state champions.  Our score in the regional competition is great, but have a lot of work to do in the next few weeks."

Academic Decathlon teams are made up of nine students – three ‘A' or Honor students; three ‘B' or Scholastic students; three ‘C' or Varsity students.  Each must compete in ten areas – art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, as well as mathematics, music, science, social science and speech.

CDO's Academic Decathlon team is preparing for the State Tournament in Glendale on March 7 & 8.
