TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

University of Arizona is breaking records when it comes to keeping their students at the university.

For the first time U of A officials report their freshman to sophomore retention rate is the highest it has ever been, surpassing the 80 percent mark.

Officials also state it is not just the overall student population doing well but the minority retention rate is also surpassing the 80 percent mark.  This includes student who identify themselves as Hispanic, African American, American Indian and Asian/Pacific Islander.  All of this information is based on recently released stats from 2012 to 2013.

The U of A credits it's strong campus ‘Partnerships' and programs like ‘New Start', a summer program to help high school students transition to college and campus life – for the retention increase.

University officials say these increases put the school on track to meet the Arizona Board of Regents goal of an 85 to 90 percent freshman retention rate.
