Pima County Corrections officer resigns amid smuggling allegations

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A Pima County Corrections Officer who was arrested on charges of smuggling contraband into the county jail has resigned, according to a Pima County Sheriff's Department release.

Arturo Martinez had been on unpaid leave pending his termination, an earlier release said, he is now facing five charges of promoting prison contraband, according to the release.   

PCSD had been conducting a long term investigation into the contraband when information led detectives to Martinez.  Martinez was arrested and is now facing charges, according to PCSD.

Also facing charges of promoting prison contraband are two Pima County inmates – Roberto Zavala is charged with three counts and Jose Ramon Ortiz is charged with two counts. 

According to PCSD detectives, a cell phone, solar phone charger and other contraband had been smuggled into the facility. The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests may be made.
