Hot, dry, and windy weather in Australia sparked dangerous wildfires this week.

On Feb. 9, three fires flared up with the largest wildfire burning about 390 square miles in just three days.

To give you some perspective, the city of Tucson only covers 227 square miles.

The largest fire, named the Snowy River Complex, is clearly visible in the images below, taken on Feb. 10.

The images were taken by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite on the Suomi NPP satellite.

In the daytime image, the smoke is clearly visible, blowing off to the east and then curving southeast towards New Zealand.

The nighttime view shows how big the fire is compared to the city lights of Melbourne.
