Be aware of 'catfishing' when using an online dating website

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Today is a day of love and for some a day for searching for love.  Those who are looking for love online should be aware of scammers who might not let cupid's arrow fly.

Online is a very popular place these days to meet people. According to a PEW Research study one in five people aged 25 to 34 has used an online dating website.

The Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona is reminding the public to beware of 'catfishing' when dating or meeting someone online.

According to the BBB the scam starts simple enough – two people meet online and connect.  Emails and phone calls follow and then things could change if one is not paying attention.

There are several red flags to watch for – when the other person asks for money or credit card information; or a person claims to be from the U.S. but is traveling or living abroad; if the other person wants to talk on an outside email or message service, or sends a questionable third party link.

For those who have experienced this or feel like they have been scammed online, contact that website and report it immediately.
