Melha Shriners hold third annual chili cook-off

Posted: Updated:

With all of the snow Western Massachusetts has had lately, what better way to warm up than with some chili?

There was a good crowd on hand Sunday as the Melha Shriners Sportsman's Club held its third annual chili cook-off.

The event has grown steadily over the years. They had six chefs in year one. Now, 25 were on hand to let people taste their recipes.

The cooks are comprised of Shriners and local restaurants.

The event organizer told CBS 3 that there is one secret to a good chili.

"Layering of flavors," said Bob Wool. "I think chili should start off in your mouth and you should taste different flavors as you go. It's the things that enhance the flavor of the chili. The meat, the chocolate, the other vegetables that are in the pot. The chili is a blending pot."

The Shriners hoped to raise $4,000 from Sunday's cook-off.

That money goes towards the Shrine Center and all that the Shriners do throughout the year.
