TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A former soldier behind bars at the federal prison on Wilmot died Saturday morning in a suspected suicide, authorities said.

Steven Dale Green, 28, from Texas, was found unresponsive in his cell on Feb. 13 and died two days later at a local medical center, according to federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman John Stahley.

Green was a private in the 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line when he was deployed to Iraq in 2006. He was one of three soldiers who raped a 14-year old Iraqi girl after he shot three members of her family.

He was convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit aggravated sexual abuse, premeditated murder and felony murder. He was serving a life sentence and was in custody at the United States Penitentiary in Tucson since Feb. 18, 2010, Stahley said.

The other soldiers involved are serving sentences in the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

The investigation into Green's death is ongoing.
