BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) - Officials say 10 inmates have been taken to a hospital - one in critical condition - following a fight at the state prison in Buckeye, west of Phoenix.
Arizona Department of Corrections officials say fewer than 100 inmates at the Stiner Unit of the Lewis complex got into a racially motivated fight about 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
Authorities say the fight in the prison's medium-security area was quickly brought under control.
DOC spokesman Doug Nick says one inmate was hospitalized in critical condition, while nine others were taken to a hospital for evaluation. Nick says he doesn't have further information on the injuries.
He says no prison staff members were injured.
Nick says the situation is under control and the prison now is on lockdown.
He says the Stiner Unit will stay on lockdown until at least next week.
