(Málaga Marítima/CNN) - Stormy weather knocked more than 500 containers loose from a ship, while stacks of other containers collapsed.

Officials made the discovery when the Danish-flagged Svendborg Maersk arrived in the Spanish port of Malaga this week.

The vessel was battered by hurricane-force winds while traveling through the Bay of Biscay, north of Spain.

A spokesperson for Maersk says 85 percent of the lost containers were empty, and the others included dry goods such as frozen meat.

This is the biggest recorded loss of containers overboard in a single incident.
