Taking a look back at January 2014

Posted: Updated:

January was one weird month for weather here in the United States. We had extremes from bitter cold and heavy snow to extreme heat and dry conditions. Arizona was part of one of those extremes this past January, and as you may of thought, it was extreme heat and dry conditions.

The Tucson International Airport saw an average temperature of about 57°, more than 4° above the average monthly temperature. And when it comes to rainfall we had one of the driest months ever with only a trace of rain reported. We should normally see about an inch of rain and all areas over the state were well below normal for precipitation.

Even with the extreme heat out west the average monthly temperature for the United States was about normal due to the extreme bitter cold in the eastern half of the country. Overall the states average a temperature .1° below the 30 year average. Here are some stats from January 2014:Now that February is almost finished we probably will not see anything different from the above graphic. With high pressure sitting overhead out west, our temps are expected to be above average and still fairly dry. Even though the northern Rockies have seen decent amounts of snow and rain, it will not make up for the lack of it back in January. The East coast has still been fairly cold and some parts have seen huge amounts of snowfall.

Hopefully with a new month starting we can get a change in the pattern and it looks like that may be possible. We will keep you posted right here at Tucsonnewsnow.com with all your weather and climate stories.
