Woman found dead inside car in north Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police are investigating whether two shooting deaths in Nashville are related.

Police say someone called 911 around 2:45 a.m. Monday saying they heard gunshots on the 3300 block of Chesapeake Circle.

"We immediately hit the floor then waited about three minutes," said neighbor Shann Sherrell.

Officers who responded found the body of 19-year-old Daresha Cole inside her teal PT Cruiser.

"There were no lights on. It was not running. The passenger's door was open," Sherrell said.

Witnesses didn't hear any other cars nearby and wonder if there was someone in the car with Cole who then ran off.

Now, police are investigating whether Cole's death is connected to the shooting death of her friend, 26-year-old Gregory Leon Johnson.

Johnson was shot near the intersection of Joseph Avenue and Grace Street in East Nashville around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police say Johnson then drove a black Volkswagen Jetta down Joseph Avenue, crashing into a fence on Salvation Army property on Dickerson Pike.

Johnson was later pronounced dead at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Police say a car with a similar description to the PT Cruiser was seen in the area around the time Johnson was shot.

Johnson has a criminal record for drugs and driver's licence offenses.

Sherrell says she didn't know the young woman who died in her driveway. She had never seen the car in the neighborhood. But she knows a little of what the girl's family will be facing. Sherrell lost a teenage nephew to murder in 2010.

"I've been through this before, and it's not a good memory," Sherrell said. "Nothing easy about seeing a young child killed in this manner at all."

Detectives from the East and Madison precincts are coordinating the investigations.

Anyone who has information on these shootings is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
