TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The Boys & Girls Club of Tucson has named its Youth of the Year recipient.

David Johnson, a senior at University High School, is the third member of the Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse to receive this honor, which recognizes outstanding contributions and service to a member's family, school, community and their own Boys & Girls Club as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome.

Johnson credits the Boys & Girls Club for providing an environment where he felt safe, allowing him to overcome his fears.  Many days he can be found at the Frank & Edith Morton Clubhouse mentoring and tutoring younger members; Johnson also engages in community support projects for the elderly, and is a member of the Help a Kid job training program.

The Mark Irvin City of Tucson Youth of the Year award is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can achieve.  As the 2014 winner at the city level, Johnson will receive a $3,000 scholarship, and will advance to Phoenix in April for a statewide competition.  With the possibility to compete at the national level for more scholarship money and the National Youth of the Year award.

"We are so proud of David," said Linda Wojtowicz, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson, in a recent release.  "He is a tremendous example of someone who has embraced and benefited from the wonderful programs and opportunities that the Clubs have to offer.  We are confident that David has secured the tools to realize his goal of attending a university and having a career as a biomedical engineer."
