TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Pima County Sheriff's Department crews in the air and on the ground helped catch an arson suspect near a flood control area.

A sheriff's helicopter responded to Alvernon Way and Valencia Road Sunday around 7 p.m. where multiple brush fires were reported.

PCSD Deputy Tracy Suitt said the air crew saw a suspect light fires near the water retention basin as he ran from the area.

Deputies told the ground crew, which chased the suspect on foot. They later identified him as 33-year-old Derek Jones.

Authorities booked him into the Pima County Adult Detention Center on nine counts of arson of property and burning of wild lands.

The Mental Health Support Team is continuing the investigation.
