TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Roughly 200 parents, students, teachers, business leaders, elected officials, and community members were to weigh in today on what the future of the Tucson Unified School District should look like.

The five-year strategic plan event for the district began at 8 a.m. and was scheduled to last until 3:30 p.m. at Tucson Electric Power, 88 E. Broadway in downtown Tucson.

Since the participants have already been chosen and seating is limited, district officials invite the public to listen in online here: http://tusd1.org/contents/distinfo/fiveyear/index.asp

The event is to help define a vision and set goals for the district. Superintendent Dr.  H.T. Sanchez has said the district's goals should not be about just what he wants, but what the community wants, too.

Topics that will be discussed include: Curriculum and instruction, communication, facilities, finance, and diversity.

A TUSD spokesperson said the district hopes to have a rough five-year strategic plan sometime this summer and implement some of the ideas during this coming school year.

This will not be the only public meeting about TUSD's future.

The public will have its chance to comment via a form that will be available on the district's website when TUSD posts video of this meeting on March 3.
