TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Border Patrol agents arrested two smuggling suspects previously convicted of sex crimes against children, CBP officials said.

Both were found trying to cross into Mexico.

Douglas Station Border Patrol Agents arrested suspect Francisco Contreras near downtown Douglas, Ariz., when agents said he tried to smuggle approximately 17 pounds of marijuana into the United States.

Agents from the Tucson Border Patrol station arrested the other suspect, Raul Meneses-Cortez, in the desert near Sasabe. He was previously charged, convicted and removed from the U.S., but was found trying to sneak back in with six other people, officials said.

CBP said both men served their sentences for the sexual misconduct crimes. Meneses-Cortez had been removed to Mexico after his prison term and Contreras was a registered sex offender in Cochise County.
