TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The National Park Service reported park visitors spend $10 for every one tax dollar spent in funding the park system.

The 2012 numbers released Monday reveal national parks generated nearly $27 billion in economic activity and supported nearly a quarter million jobs nationwide.

The Arizona impact topped $745 million and 11,000 jobs. More than half of that comes from the Grand Canyon with a $453 million economic impact and 6,000 jobs generated.

In Tucson, visitors to Saguaro National Park spent almost $38 million supporting 526 local jobs.

It's estimated last fall's government shutdown cost parks and surrounding communities an estimated $400 million in lost visitor spending.
