Proposed bill uses public money for private school tuition

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

More Tucson students could soon use public money to pay for private school tuition.

Arizona's House Monday debated House Bill 2291, which would add about 400,000 more students to a program expanded last year that gives some parents of certain students the opportunity to put their kids in private schools.

The bill states that any child who qualifies for free lunches would be eligible to switch to private school, even if he or she goes to a public school that's rated well by the state.

The bill states the change would go into effect for the 2016 school year.
