Tucson, AZ -

In a historic day in Arizona Athletics history, the Wildcats swept Arizona Christian 5-0 in the inaugural sand volleyball season opener on Friday at the Arizona Sand Volleyball Courts.

The Arizona No. 4 team of Allie Cook and Penina Snuka earned the program's first ever pairs victory as they defeated Carlee Swanson and Karleigh McClure, 21-8, 21-5.

Just a few minutes later on court 1, the Arizona team of Rachel Rhoades and Ronni Lewis won a straight set match against Betsy Caulfield and Aly Furno, 21-16, 21-13. Rhoades-Lewis clinched the win for the Wildcats as Arizona Christian was forced to forfeit at the No. 5 position due to an injury.

In the next round of competition, Arizona's No. 1 team of Madi Kingdon and Jane Croson earned a straight set victory over Samantha McCants and Haley Worden, 21-12, 21-6.

Meanwhile, the team of Madison and McKenna Witt clinched the sweep for the Wildcats at the No. 2 position as they defeated Kailaa Heaney and Sydney Smith, 21-8, 21-5.

The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow as the Arizona Invitational continues at 10 a.m. The U of A will take on Grand Canyon before closing out the tournament against Arizona State at 4 p.m.
