Businesses could benefit if streetcar hours extended

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Business owners along the streetcar route want the hours of operation extended to help business on the weekends, according to the Sunlink Streetcar Business Survey.

Under current plans, the streetcar will run until midnight on Thursdays and Fridays and until 2 a.m. on Saturdays.

However, many business owners want to get more people into the area late at night. University of Arizona students, like Clint Cott think some hour extensions make more sense than others.

"I don't think Thursday would matter so much; Friday seems like it should stay open pretty late," Cott said. "Friday nights people want to go out late and come back late."

Kevin Brinkman, another UA student thinks the nighttime hours would be beneficial to a college lifestyle.

"A lot of the usage I would get out of it would be at night and stuff, just for safety purposes," Brinkman said. "It would be an easy way to get home without having to wonder, direction-wise."

However, to run the streetcar later would increase costs. Estimates by the City Transportation Department indicate it will cost about $4 million a year to operate the streetcar. However, that number would change if the city decides to extend weekend operating hours.

The streetcar is scheduled to be up and running by July.
