RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond Public Works crews will close two lanes of Broad Street downtown after part of the road caved in.

The right lane of East Broad Street is currently closed between 5th and 6th streets, but officials say there is no immediate safety concern.  The right and center lanes will be closed Monday so crews can investigate the cause and make repairs.

Public Works spokesperson Sharon North says the excavating will help them determine what caused the road to crumble, but believes the road will not open wider in the next few days. Once they determine what is causing the 15-foot hole, they will make necessary corrections and backfill the hole.

Crews will soon place a large metal plate over the hole.
