TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

An 18-year-old gorilla successfully received an emergency c-section at San Diego Zoo Safari Park Wednesday evening.

The mother gorilla, Imani, gave birth to a full-term baby, weighing 4.6 pounds around 6:30 p.m. Veterinary staff first noticed signs of labor Wednesday morning and, by evening, there was no improvement, so they transported Imani to the veterinary hospital to perform the surgery.

The baby was taken to intensive care due to complications from the surgery and the mother was taken back to familiar surroundings to help her recover, officials said in a release.

"In retrospect the c-section was the right decision, " Nadine Lamberski, associate director of veterinary services at the zoo said in a press release. "We think the health of the fetus would have been compromised if we delayed the surgery any longer."

This was Imani's first baby and the 17th gorilla born at the zoo.
