Popular musicians tap into new, clever marketing strategy

(RNN) - A couple of musicians have tapped into a new and rather brilliant marketing strategy - app store games that also promote their music.

It's no secret that millions of Americans play free games on their mobile devices to pass the time. So combining popular music and an addictive game is pretty clever cross platform marketing.

Last month, Dong Nguyen saddened fans of his popular game Flappy Bird when he suddenly took the game completely off the market. In a stroke of a genius, American rock band Fall Out Boy only took one day to create their own version of the popular game, Fall Out Bird.

But what started out as a tongue in cheek game has actually turned into something quite clever.

Not only do users rotate through each of the band member's characters each time the game is played, but Fall Out Boy songs are the background music, including their popular hit Light Em Up.

If you've never played Flappy Bird, there are not enough words to describe how frustrating it is - but also as equally addicting. So having some rock music in the background actually serves to release the tension.

But as a rather creative promotion, the app also provides a link to buy the Fall Out Boy music you hear.

Fall Out Boy clearly knows they're onto something because they announced via Facebook and Twitter Wednesday they will soon release Fall Out Bird 2.0, an updated version including new gameplay, new hazards and more.

However, Fall Out Boy isn't the only band that's caught on to the genius of using games to promote music.

Electronic musician and singer-songwriter Skrillex recently created an alien-zapping game, called Alien Ride, in order to promote his new album Recess.

The game included a countdown to a secret album release. Once the countdown ran out, users discovered secret links to 11 unnamed tracks which unlocked every 30 minutes until all the songs on his upcoming album were available to stream well ahead of its release date.

New out of the box marketing techniques are much needed in this day and age, especially for musicians, and this is one that when done right - just might work. One thing's for sure though, fans won't be complaining.
