Pinal County traffic stop leads to drugs, money and a gun

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Authoritiesarrested a Tucson man who officials said was in possession of illegal drugs andother items during a traffic stop.

Pinal County Sheriff'sofficials said Anthony Benitez, 39, of Tucson, was pulled over for a trafficviolation while traveling westbound on U.S. 60 near mile marker 218 on Tuesday.

Officialssaid he was noticeably nervous and had a hard time remaining still.

A K-9 officernamed Aza alerted authorities to drugs in the vehicle, including five grams ofmarijuana and 1.85 ounces of methamphetamines, according to a news release.

Upon furtherinvestigation, officials discovered three methamphetamine pipes, a drug scale,a .38 caliber revolver, $2,009 in the car and $809 in cash in Benitez's pockets.

Sheriff'sofficials said Benitez has an extensive criminal record of felony andmisdemeanor offenses.

"AnthonyBenitez is a career criminal who thought he could transport drugs, money and agun through Pinal County," PCSO Sheriff Paul Babeu stated. "Now while Benitezis sitting in a jail cell once again we are in the process of seizing his moneyso that it can be used for a lawful purpose."

Authorities seizedall the items and booked Benitez into the Pinal County Jail on charges of possessionof a dangerous drug, possession of dangerous drugs for sale, transportation ofdangerous drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, andmisconduct involving weapons.
