State Senate approves $9 billion spending plan

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The state Senate has given initial approval to a $9.1 billion spending plan for the coming year and the Senate president says he believes he can get Gov. Jan Brewer on board.

The Senate debated the budget package for hours Thursday before passing it.

This budget has more than $200 million less spending than Brewer wanted and left out some of her core priorities, including money for a new school assessment test and funding to over-haul the state's child welfare system.

The bill now heads to the House.
