Greg McElroy announces NFL retirement

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy announced his retirement from the NFL via Twitter on Friday morning.

McElroy had a short career in the pros, playing only three seasons with one career start during his tenure.

He did have one memorable game with the New York Jets helping them mount a fourth quarter comeback drive to beat the Cardinals 7-6 in the 2012 season.

Most folks in the state of Alabama remember McElroy for his time as the starting quarterback in Tuscaloosa. He started for the Tide for two years, going 24-3 and leading Alabama to a 14-0 season and a national championship for 2009. McElroy was the SEC Championship Game MVP in 2009 when Alabama defeated Florida 32-13.

    After blowing a 20-point lead in the second half against LSU a week ago, the Auburn offense came out in the second half of the Arkansas game and kept the foot on the gas. The Tigers had 288 yards at the break, and added 341 yards in the second half en route to the 52-20 win.
