Today's Most Unbelievable Law: It's legal for undercover cops to have sex with prostitutes in Hawaii

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

TODAY'S MOST...Unbelievable Law: In Hawaii, it is legal for undercover police officers to have sex with prostitutes during investigations.

It might sound like a joke, but in fact police in Hawaii are urging lawmakers to keep this provision legal when they make a new law cracking down on prostitution.

The police won't say if any officers actually have had sex with prostitutes while on the job, but they say it's important they have legal protection to catch prostitutes in the act. A policeman testified in a judiciary committee meeting that "the procedures and conduct of the undercover officers are regulated by department rules, which by nature have to be confidential. Because if prostitution suspects, pimps and other people are privy to that information, they're going to know exactly how far the undercover officer can and cannot go."

Human trafficking experts and police outside Hawaii says the rule is ridiculous. One expert said "it doesn't help your case, and at worst you further traumatize someone."

The Hawaii senate is debating whether or not to keep the provision in the bill about prostitution. One lawmaker who originally wanted to make it illegal for police to have sex with prostitutes, said he wanted to defer to the police in this situation.
