TIA a step closer to new control tower

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson International Airport is a step closer to getting a new control tower.

The FAA awarded Hensel Phelps Construction in Phoenix a $26 million contract to build a new tower on the southwest side of TIA.

The current neon-lit tower is more than 50 years old and controllers complain it's too short and too far away from main traffic areas.

The new tower will be twice as high and is expected to be finished by the end of 2015.

Tucson Airport Authorities is looking at possible aviation business uses for the old tower.
