TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

U.S.Rep. Ron Barber to host his second Academy Expo this weekend; it will be aninformation session for high school students seeking nomination to a U.S. serviceacademy.

"It is a great honor to nominate deserving young men and women to our nationalservice academies," Barber said in a recent release. "I hope that students withthe drive to serve our nation and pursue a rigorous course of study will cometo meet with academy representatives and hear about the outstanding educationalopportunities these institutions offer."

Studentsand their parents will have the opportunity to meet with the congressman andrepresentatives from the following military academies - U.S. Air Force Academy,U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant MarineAcademy, as well as a representative from the U of A ROTC.  

Interestedstudents must apply for nomination in the congressional district where theyreside. If the applicant meets the high standards required by the academies, heor she will be offered an interview with the congressman's Academy NominatingCommittee.

Barber, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, may nominate candidatesto each academy, but the academies make the final decision.

The expo is Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to noon at Empire High SchoolAcademy (10701 E. Mary Ann Cleveland Way, Vail)
