TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A 7th grade Art Club student with the Sonoran-Science Academy Tucson Art Club wins big at the Scholastic Art Awards.

Alexis Leon-Guerrero first received a Gold Key award at the regional level, which included youth from Arizona, Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.  This win advanced Alexis to the national competition in New York.

During spring break last week, Alexis received a call that she had won a Silver Key Award at the national level as well, for her still life titled 'Fruits and Vegetables'.  According to a release from Sonoran-Science Academy, Alexis was the only Arizona contestant to receive this honor in drawing.  She will receive her award at a presentation in Carnegie Hall in New York City in June.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards have been around for the last 90 years, and are considered one of the longest running and most prestigious awards a creative teen can get.  In 2013 the Awards program received more than 230,000 original works from students around the world.
