TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

One freshman from the Sonoran Science Academy Davis-Monthan willhave more on his mind than summer plans.

David Zulli will be competing in the International Sustainable WorldEnergy Engineering Environment Project Olympiad (ISWEEP) from May 1 to May 4.

According to an SSA Davis-Monthan release David recently won a$2,000 Foundation Scholarship during the Southern Arizona Science andEngineering Fair (SARSEF), as well as an all expense paid trip to compete atISWEEP.

David's award winning project is part of an ongoing project at theUniversity of Arizona, where he has been working with Dr. Peter Waller.  The project - the Effects of SupplementalIllumination on the Biomass Production Rate of Chlorella Sorokinania - whichstudies if light is extended beyond the daytime hours will more algae grow.  The algae would then be used in biofuelresearch (as an alternative energy source). David won second place in the SARSEF in the Engineering: Materials andBioengineering category, in addition to the scholarship and trip.

The ISWEEP competition is to be held May 1 - 4 in Houston, Texas;it is a unique science fair that brings together some of the brightest highschool students from across the globe.

According to Davis-Monthan Science Department Chair, BrianRafacz, it is an amazing opportunity for a student to be able to mingle withpeers from so many different countries and will give David an opportunity tosee what other students are doing in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) disciplines.
