TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The team from Sonoran Science Academy-Broadway took away top honors at the state level of the 2014 MathCounts competition.

Schools from across Arizona came to the University of Arizona campus on Saturday, March 29 to compete in four rounds of competition.  There were two rounds of math questions for individual competitors, a team round where four students competed to answer ten questions and then a 'countdown' round, a head to head elimination round of the top ten individuals.

SSA Broadway finished with all four team members, Samuel Merson, Walker Kroubalkian, Andrew Waugaman, and Joaquin Pesqueira, in the top ten and the team took top honors in the team event.

The format of the competition means that SSA-Broadway team coach, Hakan Durmaz, will take a team of the top four individually-ranked Arizona students to the 2014 Raytheon MathCounts National Championships, held on May 9 in Orlando.

8th grader Samuel Merson and 7th grader Walker Kroubalkian from SSA-Broadway who placed 3rd and 1st respectively, will be joined by 8th grader Lahiru Gunesekara from sister school SSA Davis-Monthan, and a student from Mesa, who placed 4th, will complete the team.

The Raytheon MATHCOUNTS Competition Program is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging "bee" style contests. The program exists in all 50 states plus U.S. territories and the Department of Defense and State Department schools.
