WASHINGTON (AP) - House Speaker John Boehner is spending $125,000 on television ads in his Ohio district to fend off three fellow Republicans in the primary.

Boehner, the top Republican in the House, hasn't run ads since his 2010 re-election. But outside groups such as the Tea Party Leadership Fund have been spending money in Boehner's southwest Ohio district to weaken him.

A political operative who tracks ad spending says Boehner is spending $61,000 in the Dayton media market and another $64,000 in Cincinnati. The ads are set to run through April 16.

Boehner is expected to survive the primary challenge.

The 12-term lawmaker did not draw a Democratic challenger in 2012 and fended off a primary challenger that year by 68 percentage points.

Ohio votes on May 6.
