Butler Co. sheriff warns residents about telephone scam

HAMILTON, OH (FOX19) – -

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones is warning residents to be cautious about a telephone scam that has targeted at least two county residents (one in Liberty Township and one Fairfield) within the last couple of weeks.

In one instance, the scammer posed as an IRS agent attempting to collect back taxes.

In the other case, the scammer claimed to be a Butler County Sheriff's deputy calling about complaints filed with the Department of Justice needing to satisfy some kind of debt. In both instances, the sheriff's office said residents were threatened with arrest and/or jail time if the debt was not immediately settled.

Jones said government agencies like the IRS or even police, fire, and sheriff's offices, do not act in this manner.

The sheriff's office said a red flag would be that you have to wire money or purchase money pack or debit cards to settle a supposed debt.

"Scammers tend to prey on people's fears of tragic consequences -- going to jail, having a relative stuck in a jail without bond, or something similar," Jones said.
