TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Crews with Sierra Vista Public Works now have a new tool to help them in the battle with graffiti.

A heated pressure washer was added to the toolbox.  It will replace the sand blaster, paint, rollers and pans that were used in the old 'paint over' method, according to a City of Sierra Vista release.

With this new eco-friendly and faster device, crews will be able to remove graffiti in a fraction of the time that old removal used to take.  In 2013 SV crews cleaned more than 3,200 square feet of graffiti, logging in more than 60 hours painting, and sandblasting graffiti from block walls, utility boxes, sidewalks and other public structures that included concrete drainage walls and bridges.

According to Sierra Vista city officials, graffiti removal crews respond quickly, within 72 hours to remove the paint, but crews are sometimes delayed when responding to calls on private property.  A property owner's approval must be obtained first, before crews can remove graffiti.

Used paint donations will no longer needed to remove graffiti, according to the release.  Residents who need to dispose of paint may drop it off at the County Transfer Station (7201 E. Hwy 90 near mile marker 325).

Experts often refer to graffiti as a "gateway crime", stating it could lead to addictive behaviors like drug and alcohol abuse, and an array of other criminal activities such as breaking and entering, arson, theft, and robbery.

SV Public Works is still in need of community assistance in cleaning up graffiti, by reporting it.  Leave a message on the graffiti hotline at (520) 452-7017 or report it online to www.SierraVistaAZ.gov (search for graffiti and select report graffiti).
