Clean up underway in Irwin Co.

IRWIN CO., GA (WALB) -

Severe weather caused damage in Irwin County. The National Weather Service will decide Tuesday morning if there's enough evidence of a possible tornado for them to send out a survey team.

There were a lot of downed trees and power lines near Ocilla. It will take several days for residents to clean up the mess. Heavy rain and strong wind took down a large tree in Jimmy Thomas' yard.

"Its been here ever since 1966 and we should have had it cut out but we didn't," says Irwin County resident Jimmy Thomas.

Thomas and his wife took cover in their bathroom right after they lost power to their home on highway 129  just three miles south of Ocilla. He says the storm didn't last long.

"My wife and I went and got in the bathtub and in a few minutes it was over with," says Thomas.

Meanwhile work crews stayed busy picking up large trees and restoring power.

People who live on Poppy Rd. also had a lot of damage. One homeowner lost two of his storage sheds and had some damage to his house. The roof was also torn off his neighbor's house.

"Messed my house up and my storage buildings and so fourth. Around back it tore down some trees had some property damage over next door to us. Took a roof off of the house next to me," says Irwin county resident David Benson.

David Benson says it's been a while since they've seen a storm like this hit their area.

"We have had some that's come down the road and messed up some pivots and everything," says Benson.

Now that clean up is underway residents say they're just happy to be safe.

"The lord was just with us and took care of us so we are mighty fortunate,"says Thomas.

The Forest Service said Tuesday’s high winds, coupled with dry vegetation and low relative humidity – is a formula that can create massive wildfires. Like the Aspen Fire on Mt Lemmon that burned 84,000 acres in 2003.
