Eight year old recovering, though no suspects in hit and run

PIMA COUNTY, AZ ( Tucson News Now) -

Information is still very limited in the case of an eight year old boy who was struck by a passing motorist last Thursday near West Curtis Road and North Shannon.

Authorities say Rene Harwood was doing everything he was supposed to at the time of accident. He was crossing the street with an adult in the intersection, when a white sedan came through and slammed into the little boy and his bicycle.

Fortunately, the eight year old survived the collision. But authorities have very little information about the motorist who hit him.

As you might imagine, eight year old Rene Harwood was in a lot of pain after seeing his life flash before his eyes in this intersection.

Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet when that vehicle plowed into him.

Had he not, this very well could have been a fatal hit and run collision.

"At one point one of the witnesses did recall a white car speeding away so it appears that whoever might have done this is probably aware that they struck someone and they left the scene," says Pima County Deputy Tracy Suitt.  "That's who we're looking for today."

"The guy's a coward," says Gerhard Shake, the victim's great uncle.  "If he has any kind of conscious at all he should step forward."

Like everybody else in the family, Shake can't believe somebody could do this to an 8 year old boy and just leave him on the side of the road.

"Come forward please -- that is wrong," he says. "How would you feel if it was your child?"

Good news is little Rene is doing much better today.

He did suffer a badly broken arm but considering the circumstances it could have been so much worse.

We're told a church group replaced Rene's bicycle and his helmet.

Speaking of helmets, Northwest Fire Captain Adam Goldberg was on the scene when the boy was struck last week.

"That message is getting out," Goldberg says.  "Everybody needs to be wearing a helmet no matter what they're doing if it's a scooter, if it's a bicycle...helmets, helmet, helmets."

As for person who did this, authorities are asking the public's help with anything they may have seen or heard about this accident.

It happened last Thursday just after 6 p.m.

"Because there may be damage to this car...because apparently it may be a newer-model type vehicle," Suitt says.

Whether you're a witness or a repair shop, call 911 or 88-CRIME if you have any information about the case.
