Reid Park Zoo receives AZA accreditation

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Reid Park Zoo received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), according to a recent AZA release.

In order to receive the accreditation Reid Park had to undergo a review to ensure it has and will continue to meet the AZA's standards. Zoos and aquariums are required to complete this review every five years, in order to remain members of the AZA.

Part of the accreditation process is not only a detailed application, but a meticulous on-site inspection by a team of trained zoo and aquarium professionals.  They look at the entire operation - including animal care, keeper training, safety for not only visitors but staff and animals, as well as educational programs, conservation efforts, veterinary programs. Assessments are also done on the financial stability, risk management in addition to visitor services and several other areas.

To cap off the process, top zoo/aquarium officials are interviewed at a formal hearing of the AZA's independent Accreditation Commission.  It is after this interview that a status is either granted, tabled or denied.

According to the release those that are denied must wait one year before reapplying to the accreditation program.

The AZA is a nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in four different areas - conservation, education, science and recreation.
