Cover to Cover program promotes early reading

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The nonprofit group 'Make Way for Books' has launched a literacy program at the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.  Their goal is to help Arizona students read better.

The 'Cover to Cover' program gives economically disadvantaged children the opportunity to develop pre-reading skills outside of the preschool classroom.

Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild was at the initial launch.  He read to a group of children and talked about the importance of learning to read early.

"The sooner we can get our young children reading and literate, their chances for success in our community is much greater," Rothschild said.

'Cover to Cover' will be held at the Community Food Bank near 36th St. and Country Club every Tuesday through May 27.
