PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Four people, including a man in a wheelchair, escaped a house fire at 15th Avenue just north of Buckeye Road in Phoenix on Thursday night, but a family pet was not so lucky.

There are two homes on the property and the fire broke out about 2 a.m. in a small add-on in the back that served as a second residence, said Phoenix fire Capt. Larry Nunez.

Nunez said firefighters' efforts were hampered by stacked belongings in the residence.

A neighbor said the people who lived in the back addition didn't have electricity and had been using a candle for light.

One dog died in the fire, Nunez said.

Nunez said the investigation into the cause was continuing.
